A How-To Use Technology in the Classrooom Guide!

Technology is changing constantly in the world around us, and so is the world of education. Now, it is a must to include computer technology of some type within the classroom. For the veteran teacher, I have discovered a few reasons teachnology should be used in the classroom:

1. Student learning/motivation: Use of instructional technology can increase student learning and/or motivation to learn over other teaching methods.

2. Technology in the workplace: 75% of all jobs require use of a computer in some capacity. Students who are skilled in using technology in accomplishing tasks in school will be better prepared for the world of work.

3. Use of instructional technology facilitates development of a student-centered learning environment rather than a teacher-centered classroom. This allows the student to learn effectively on their own.

For the veteran teachers- here are some ways to integrate technology into the classroom.
1. Online Streaming Videos- almost every subject imaginable has a streaming video that you can access online to help with a lesson. Check out some resources such as United streaming and YouTube to embed video within your lesson.
2. WebQuests- students can be given a challenge, have fun, and learn at the same time. Visit QuestGarden.com to assign a WebQuest activity for you classroom to explore. Also, you may try to have your classroom make their own WebQuest page!
3. Wiki-pages- These pages are especially neat to use in the classroom! Students can design a "how-to" page on practically anything they wish! Wiki-pages are also valuable in the fact that you may manipulate them anyway you wish, while they are still able to be viewed on the internet!
4. Podcasts- A student may simply listen to information via the internet through podcasts. Podcasts give important information, also as Online Streaming Videos, without pictures.
5. Classroom Websites- These are a very important asset in the world of technology in the classroom. Information can be easily obtained by parents and students. Homework assignments may be posted on them, as well as grading information! It also saves paper and time!

Those are just a few ways that technology can be integraded into the classroom! Computer technology allows the teacher to be creative and professional at the same time!

EXCITING!!

Almost over 24 hours later, my changes to the Wikipedia article are still there!! Woo hoo!! It CAN be done!!!

Gabcast!!

Gabcast! Educational Technology #0 - Educational Technology Lesson Plan

The four main components to a successful lesson plan in the classroom using educational technology.

Podcasts for Education!

There are quite a few webcasts for education purposes. There are tons for every subject imaginable. I, as a young child, would often have problems with math...elementary school through high school. I believe that if we would have had podcasting back when I was not attending college, it could have helped me tremendously. It's almost like having a teacher at home! Check out these podcasts for math resources that could benefit teachers (and students)!

Elementary School:
Video Math Tutor: Basic Math

Middle School:
Video Math Tutor: Algebra

High School:
Mathgrad Podcast

My Favorite Podcast!

I listened to several podcasts that deal with science lessons in schools. These include Sciencecast with Thomas Wanhoff, Science Friday with NPR Radio, and Instant Anatomy with Dr. Robert Whitaker.

My favorite podcast, however, is the Science on the Wild Side podcast with the "Singing Science Teacher. " I like this podcast because it involves humorous educational songs. In my experience, songs and music are great ways for memorization to take place! If you love science and animals in particular, check this podcast out!

Wikipedia Article Change!

Hello my fellow bloggers! I have attempted to do the unthinkable! Doo-dee-doo! I have attempted to change the Wikipedia article on my High School in the Sullivan County School System! Check out Sullivan Central High School's article! I did the whole portion on cheerleading! Below is what I added! I'll keep you posted on if it changes!

=== Cheerleading ===
Sullivan Central High School has tryouts every spring for Varsity, Junior Varsity, and just recently, Competition Team positions. The Varsity cheerleading squad cheers for the Varsity football team, and Varsity Boys' Basketball team. The Junior Varsity cheerleaders cheer for the Freshman and Junior Varsity football teams, as well as the Varsity Girls' Basketball team. Some talent that has been on the squads over the past nine years include Amy Hilton (2001), Meagan Harr (2004), Ashley Mills (2004), Keisha Geisler (2006), and Michelle Ramsey (2007). These girls all cheered for college teams during some point in their cheerleading career.

Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking can be very beneficial to a teacher. The main benefit of using a social bookmarking service, such as del.ici.ous, is easily finding needed information for lesson plans. If a teacher bookmarks specific educational websites, he or she can go to the tagged websites to find the specific one they are looking for by looking at the notes that can be typed up with each tag. What makes social bookmarking helpful to a teacher who is using this tool is that the teacher can view other teachers' tagged websites, which may help broaden a teacher's selection of topics and ideas for a lesson plan! Very neat!

Pros and Cons of Educational Blogging

I see more pros than cons in the world of blogging for educational purposes. One good outcome of blogging is....anyone, anywhere can join in on a discussion. You can also see what other students have to say. Another good thing about blogging is, students will be less likely to be shy about posting an answer or thought because you are behind a computer. Students will also have the ability to join in lectures from their homes, without commuting. This will also save time and money.

On the other hand, a con is that we have no face-to-face interaction. We need to have personal interaction. It is a very important social skill. Blogging can also be very boring at times. We need to have interaction in the world of education it makes learning more fun!

Hey, it's Meagan! Thanks for reading my blog!

So most of you are probably wondering why do I want to be a teacher? The answer is simple! It is the most rewarding job one can possess! I'll be the one responsible for educating the minds of brilliant doctors, lawyers, and even future teachers!

I love giving to others, and I think that this will be an appropriate job for me to have!
